Sam and Max – Culture Shock

Well, I finally finished the latest Sam and Max game, so here’s my mini-review:

+ Small download size, small footprint on the harddrive.
+ Good graphics.
+ Great music.
+ Great puzzles (all logical, maybe a little too easy at times).
+ Hilarious, the Sam and Max humor gets me every time. Wacky characters and overall story make this a very funny adventure.
– Sound and voice files are compressed a tad too much and therefore distorted.
– A tad unstable, kept crashing on scene changes. The Telltale forums tell me my GFX chipset isn’t supported, but others reported the same issue with supported graphics cards so I doubt it’s that.
– Small scenery, only 6 ‘rooms’ (see point below).
– The game is way too short. Yes, this is due to the episodic format and for only 9$ (or 6$ if you bought the entire season at once) per episode the price is absolutely fair. It’s just that, once you start playing, you reach the end credits way too quickly and neither story nor puzzles get very deep in that time.

Anyway, don’t let the few negative bits I mentioned fool you, it is a great game and more than worthy successor to the 13 year old ‘Sam and Max Hit the Road’ adventure. I can hardly wait for the next episode to come out. In the meantime, I guess I’ll have to read Halo – Ghosts of Onyx which finally got delivered to me.
